How do you differentiate yourself in a market dominated by Proctor and Gamble, Johnson and Johnson, Method and other huge companies with product like, Clorox Bleach, All, Tide and others? You cannot out spend them with marketing dollars and you can’t magically create bigger distribution channels, so what to do?
As an entrepreneur you have to think of better innovations, move faster with better quality and you have to create a loyal following by loving your customers! It will take time, but you can succeed as I have seen and done in the past with some of the largest competitors on the planet.
Love your customers with great service, great products and transparency. Give them what they want and they will come back for more.

Currently I’m designing a line of fragrances for my laundry line. What I thought would take a handful of months has ended up being over year and I’m still not done. I’m thankful to the dedicated team of fragrance specialists otherwise I think this would have been a three year process. Holly Moley. There are 12 scents, yes that’s right, 12 scents. I love them all, truly. Each have a place. As I smell fruity, & flirty scents from each little brown glass bottle, I think of the different customers I’ve met at the Farmers Markets we attend and what they might like–traditional lavender… oba leaf & bamboo…lily…star fruit…This process has been and still continues to be incredibly time consuming and sometimes exhausting but I really can’t think of any other way to really develop laundry scents people will enjoy. As I type this posting I realize its time to just make my selections, I mean I have lots of feedback. I guess I didn’t ask myself the one question I should have asked myself which happens to be “How many votes do I need to make a decision?” Is it 20, 75, 400, 2,000 or even more. I have enough information to make my decision – I’ll narrow down to 6 fragrances and I’ll set a goal to have them ready to use by October 24, which happens to be the Natural Products Expo in Boston, MA, my first trade show ever.

A frequent question I’m asked when I’m out and about is, “What makes your detergent better than the others?”
Of all the questions, this is the easiest one to answer. The big differentiator is our naturally-dervied ingredients – a

combination of minerals and plant based ingredients. It’s sorta like combining old school with new school. Minerals have proven themselves to be safe and effective over the past decades and the plant based components bring the latest and greatest green technology to the formulas. Personally, I feel the detergents that are solely plant based aren’t effective enough. If I’m going to take the time to turn on the washing machine – using water and energy – I want an effective detergent. For those of you who like to know the list of ingredients, you can check them out — http://www.grabgreenhome.com/ingredients.html
Speaking of naturally-derived ingredients this leads me right into why I named our everyday deteregent, 3-in-1. When developing a formula, it doesn’t matter what type of formula being created, there are performance targets and criteria baselines that are established. I based the detergent formulation on my own experiences as a mom - My daily laundry regime was to sort, pre-treat, wash and soften the clothes so it was only natural to me to focus my energy on creating a single laundry detergent that would shorten this process…Thankfully, with the help of my amazing organic chemist team we were able to successfully achieve my goals. So that’s much it.

As I begin to write my first blog posting, quick flashes of ideas stream through my mind of what to write. I’ll start with why I chose the title “Makings of a Mad Mom” for my blog. It came about while I was in the kitchen late at night, with my hair tied up in knots, bright green dish gloves on my hands, mixing ingredients for another one of my product ideas, this one happened to be a lemon and salt based wood cutting board cleaner. Nonetheless, I was measuring, stirring, smelling, but not tasting, too sour, my newest formula when my daughter Britney, just appeared in the kitchen, out of no where. It was like she apparated there. (For all you non-Harry Potter fans, this is a form of transporation for witches.) I screamed at the top of my lungs, ahhhhhh. I was so focused on what I was doing I didn’t hear her walk in. It was at that point when she made an impersonation of a mad scientist, “The Makings of a Mad Mom.” So there you have it…my first posting. Keep your fingers-crossed my posting content improves.
